We are thrilled to announce that Port Washington North has been designated as a certified Pro-Housing Community. We were awarded a
$675,000 grant thanks to Governor Kathy Hochul’s Pro-Housing Communities Initiative to support our Playground Project. This funding
will help create a more inclusive and accessible recreational space for all families in our community.
On the heels of the very successful Port Washington North Accessible Playground and Recreational Facility Project Phase 1, fully funded
in large part by the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historical Preservation, and Governor Kathy Hochul’s $1,000,000 grant, the
Village of Port Washington North is now able to expand Phase 1 for the benefit of the entire Port Washington community; the Port
Washington North Accessible Playground and Recreational Facility Project Phase 2 Splash Pad Water Play and Outdoor Fitness
Equipment project. Phase 1 provided the funding for an all inclusive/accessible playground.
With this generous grant, we will be able to enhance our public spaces with:
A splash pad for children to enjoy
Creation of quarter mile ADA accessible walking trail with outdoor exercise equipment
Lighting for walking trail
Expanded recreational areas
Construction of a parking lot for the facility
The splash pad will include numerous pieces of water play that will be geared to various age groups. It will have a nautical theme to tie
the area into our waterfront community. It will have numerous features that are both handicap accessible and inclusive for our children.
The eight-foot wide walking trail will be handicap accessible and suitable for all ages with outdoor fitness equipment stations and sensory
stations for children. The path will be lit at night through the installation of bollard lighting.
The accessible parking lot will allow for easy egress to and from the various park areas. In sum, this project truly falls under the heading
of “all inclusive” Once the initial plans are finalized we will present them to the Village.
We wish to thank Governor Hochul for the $675,000 award for Phase 2 and her continued support of our Village’s vision for this
playground project and our plans for the Village’s future. Governor Hochul’s Pro-Housing Communities Initiative provided up to $650
million in discretionary funding annually to support local infrastructure, housing, and community projects across New York State. To
date, 273 municipalities have been certified as Pro-Housing Communities, making them eligible for critical funding to improve public
spaces and services.
We are deeply grateful for this investment in Port Washington North and look forward to bringing this inclusive, family-friendly
recreational space to life.
Stay tuned for updates as the project progresses!
