January 2016
Dear Port North Residents,
I want to use this opportunity to wish you a Happy New Year and best wishes for 2016. I also wanted to share some information about matters around the Village.
Over the past 6 months or so I have personally experienced a significant decrease in mail delivery performance as well as later deliveries (6 to 7pm!). A number of residents have reached out to me and expressed similar experiences and concerns.
Just when I thought this was only a Port North issue, I came upon a letter to the editor in the Port Washington News titled “Mail Call” (January 6-12 edition, page 2A) that summed up the situation to a tee. The following is a link to the letter: https://portwashington-news.com/mail-call/
I have called our Postmaster Angela LaBianca to express my concerns and try to find out what the issue is and more importantly how to resolve it. As of this posting she has failed to return my phone calls. In addition, one of our neighbors going through the same ordeal has graciously taken this to a higher level, contacting Senator Chuck Schumer’s office for action. He has also called the regional office referenced in the Port News letter at 800–275-8777 or the local number at 718-348-3900.
While I will do what I can to restore our mail service to normal conditions, I believe it would be in the best interests of the Village that for any residents feeling the pain to express their opinions by calling the numbers above as well. The more complaints they receive, the more likely they are to act.
Also, The Nikkei of Peru has opened on Shore Road. The owners, Asa and Lina Jong shared a press release with us and I wanted to share some information with you to support the new business. The Nikkei of Peru is a new age Japanese Restaurant that is inspired by the fusion of Japanese dishes with certain of the spices and flavors of Peru, resulting in a unique fusion that is evidence of Japan’s historical influence in Peru. Japanese immigrants to Peru are referred to as “The Nikkei”.
Specialties include Ceviche Mixta, Tacu Tacu Bites, Beef Wantanes, Tiradito Carpaccio and Black Cod as “Small Plates”, and Pisco Salmon, Jalea, Jalapeno Short Ribs and NIKKEI Inspiration Sushi Platters for “Large Plates”. The menu also provides a full assortment of traditional Japanese dishes including, Sushi, Sashimi, and Specialty Rolls. Sauces and spices again, are Peruvian Inspired. The Restaurant will not be providing typical “Peruvian Foods”, it will be providing inspired Japanese dishes with a Peruvian twist, marrying Asia and Latin America. Master Chef/Owner Asa Jong is one of the world’s experts on the preparation of this unique NIKKEI Cuisine. Chef Asa has spent many years perfecting his trade at several world-renowned restaurants, including, most recently, a 10-year employment with Nobu 57 in Manhattan. We wish them luck and I hope that you support the restaurant.
I want to also remind you of the new parking restrictions implemented in the Village to be in effect during snow emergencies. Despite the unseasonable warmth so far this winter, we want to be prepared for any storms. When more than three inches of snow is predicted to fall, the Mayor may declare a snow emergency. Parking is restricted until the declaration is lifted. The snow emergency parking restriction is not be applicable to the following streets: Mill Pond Road, east side of Waterview Drive, and Soundview Drive only between the cross streets of Dock Lane and Waterview Drive. More information can be found on the village’s website.
As always, if you need to contact me directly, please email at mayor@portwashingtonnorth.org or call me on my cell phone at 516-233-9581. And please visit our website at www.portwashingtonnorth.org for information on a number of topics.
