Greetings Port North Residents,
In an effort to continue to provide frequent updates on happenings in and around the Village, we have put together a December newsletter with the latest information available.
On November 21st, we held the grand opening event for the new Village Hall! It was a great success and visitors enjoyed seeing the new space along with the displayed artwork and photos. If you were not able to attend, please stop by during business hours or on the first Wednesday of every month when we hold our meetings of the Board of Trustees.
We are pleased to announce that new businesses have opened or are preparing to open in the Village. Tropical Smoothie Café is set to open in the Stop & Shop Center along with Nikkei of Peru on Shore Road. Also, Jamba Juice will be opening inside of the Stop & Shop building, sharing dining space with Starbucks. We hope that more businesses will open in the near future.
You may have seen that Soundview Marketplace has made improvements to the parking lot and façade. As mentioned in our Fall newsletter, we have been working with the bank controlling the property to ensure that they are compliant with all safety requirements but also that improvements are made to renovate and revive the location whereby it will be attractive to new tenants. The progress has been slow in both making physical improvements to the location and in attracting new tenant, but we are hopeful that the recent work and the ongoing communication with the Village will result in a more attractive space that will bring in new businesses.
I want to take this opportunity to congratulate Village resident Bob Keene on his appointment as Chairman of the Manhasset Bay Protection Committee. Bob’s work on the committee and in preserving our marine land is invaluable to our Village. I would also like to recognize the work of Port North resident Neil Lazar who has been serving as President of the Community Chest of Port Washington. Under Neil’s leadership, the Community Chest provides support for more than 20 programs benefitting teens, seniors, adults and children. These are two wonderful organizations and we are proud of the leadership demonstrated by residents of our Village within the Port Washington community.
As a reminder, the Village has enacted a new law restricting local street parking during snow emergencies. When more than three inches of snow is predicted to fall, the Mayor may declare a snow emergency. Parking is restricted until the declaration is lifted. The snow emergency parking restriction is not be applicable to the following streets: Mill Pond Road, east side of Waterview Drive, and Soundview Drive only between the cross streets of Dock Lane and Waterview Drive. We hope that the new rules will result in improved plowing, safer travel, and a safer Village.
Also, please remember to register at www.northshorealert.org for important emergency information and updates. By registering with NorthShoreAlert.org, time-sensitive voice messages from the Villages, Town, or Police, Fire, and Water special districts where you live or work may be sent to your home, cell or business phone. Text messages may also be sent to cell phones, e-mail accounts and hearing impaired receiving devices. In addition, the village website contains some tips and recommendations for storm preparation and emergency management.
